Footnotes

This group is related to an earlier set of thirty five drawings of trades and occupations paintings, dated 1826, in the Victoria and Albert Museum (IS.53-1964), see Archer, Company Paintings Indian Paintings of the British period, 1992., p 88.

With the increase of employees to the British East India Company in India and other South Asian countries, the firm wanted images to send or take home of the wondrous new world of people, floral and fauna. Local artists worked to fill this demand and thus the term "Company" paintings was coined. Patna was one of the major centers of Company painting because it was home to both an important commercial and a provincial seat of power for the British, and thus to many British expatriates.

Provenance:
Estate of Carl S. Dentzel, Los Angeles
