Maharaja Sarup Singh of Mewar in the zenana
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper: set within a dazzling red and yellow chevron pattern interior, within matching robes, the ruler and his courtesan are sharing a cup of wine. Four attendants flank the couple ready with refreshments, morchal, and the rulers shield and sword. Miniature paintings of the ruler in equestrian poses line the upper walls. Image: 10 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. (27.3 x 19.6 cm.); Folio: 12 x 8 1/2 in. (30.5 x 21.6 cm.)
Footnotes
This striking scene is not known to connect to any previous depictions of the zenana at the royal court of Udaipur. However, it would seem to follow the extraordinary invention that the atelier of Tara and Sivalal were exploring at time when there position in the court was rapidly diminishing under pressure from photography.
Provenance:
Mrs. Le Roy Davidson Collection, Los Angeles
Acquired from Sotheby's, New York, March 25, 1987, lot 136.
