Tiger hunt
Opaque watercolor on paper with cut-out sections; set against a wild rocky mountain and meandering river various tigers are being pursued by hunters, drinking after the kill near a shrine, attacking an elephant and a human, and pursuing deer. Various indistinguishable figures are set on the ridge line shooting at the tigers. Image: 10 1/8 x 31 1/2 in. (25.6 x 80 cm.); Folio: 11 x 33 in. (27.9 x 83.8 cm.)
Footnotes
This classic hunting scene showing figures shoot at tigers on a rocky mountain scape. In a convention not normally found in Rajasthani paintings the artist has cut out forms of various elements within the composition to be inlaid with unknown material. The choice of shapes and elements do not suggest that they would be embellished with special materials as the subjects are plants, minor animals, and flowers. For related large format late 18th century tiger hunt from Kotah see Welch, Gods, Thrones and Peacocks, 1997, no. 51, p. 179.
Provenance:
Acquired from Kapoor Galleries, 1988
