Maharaja Pritam Singh of Kulu issuing payment
Opaque watercolor on paper;the ruler with his infant son in his lap, presents a reward or payment to a favored minister in the form of two gold bangles. Two attendants with a morchal and a staff flank the composition, while another beckons to figures outside the frame. Image: 7 1/2 x 10 1/4 in. (19 x 26 cm.); Folio: 9 x 12 in. (30.4 x 22.8 cm.)
Footnotes
Although Bhagawan's style is not recognized for precise detail in the faces, there appears to a definite grimace on the face of the raja, as hands over the gold bangles. The presence of stacks remaining on the carpet and the tied sacks next to them, along with the beckoning gesture of the attendant figure behind the wall, suggest that more is to be handed out.
Compare with an very closely related composition in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see Archer, Indian Paintings, 1973, no. 35, p. 255.
Provenance:
Acquired from Kapoor Galleries, 1983.
