Portrait of a Raja Suma Sen and prince
Opaque watercolor on paper; the ruler and his entourage are all dressed in white jamas on a striped rug; he is smoking a hookah and admiring his youthful companion up close. Image: 6 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. (15.9 x 17.1 cm.); Folio: 8 x 8 3/8 in. (20.3 x 22.2 cm.)
Footnotes
Surma Sen was the son of Shamsher Sen and grandson of the great Mandi warrior Sidh Sen. He ruled from 1781 to 1788 and was considered fail and as ineffective as his peculiar father. Shown here grasping the chin of a young prince or perhaps a courtier, the suggestion of a dalliance seems plausible as the youth places both hands upon the raja's knees. The unusual hairstyle of of the attendant chauri bearer is another sign that the young ruler followed his father's preferences for unconventional entourage.
Provenance:
Acquired from Navin Kumar, 1984
