A copper alloy portrait of a Nyingmapa lama
Tibet, 17th century
Inscribed on the back of the base, partially illegible.
bla ma sla bdu 'dul......
The Lama is withdrawn (in meditation) and subdues....
With bulging eyes and long hair arranged in a tripartite topknot and the tresses falling over his shoulders, the lama seated on double cushion platform with both hands extending beyond the the knees in meditation. With a phurba tucked into his belt, he wears layered and voluminous robes fully covering his arms and chest. 3¾ in. (9.5 cm)
