A gray chloritic schist stele of Vishnu as Shridara
Nepal, 11th/12th century
The four-armed 'bearer of prosperity', Vishnu stands in frontally with a flaming prabhamandala that frames the central figure. His raised left hand holds a mace and his raised right hand a war discus. His lower left hand holds a conch and his lower right a round object symbolizing the fruit of knowledge. He wears a tall crown centered by a lion's face and tied by tassels fanned out behind his ears, further adornment includes a beaded pectoral, snake-form armbands and a beaded belt securing his finely pleated and diaphanous dhoti. A large sash is slung across his thighs and terminates in pleated fish-tails by his ankles. 37 in. (94 cm.) high
