A bronze casket
South Asian, probably Deccan, 16th century
Of domed form with a tall arching lid fitted with a handle, the cover connected by a hinge to a spreading ovoid base ornamented with side handles and faux straps with double-spear terminals, finished with a double-hinge lock and raised on small lion mask feet.

Footnotes
The shape and strapwork design of this casket is very much associated with both Italian and German metal work of the 16th century. However, the large lock device is more closely connected with devices found in the Deccan boxes of the same period and later.
