South India, circa 17th century
The panel represents a fantastical scene of two yali with long, crossed necks poised to attack two human figures riding on elephants. An adorsed yali at the center divides the two elephants. 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. (24.1 x 15.9 cm.)

Footnotes
The remarkable quality of carving and large scale suggest that this element is from a throne or possibly a large cabinet. The treatment of the mythological beasts compares favorably with the architectural brackets (see lot 1042).
