Three ivory yali architectural brackets
Madurai, 17th century
Each yali or vyala is rampant with front paws raised, and gaping mouths revealing sharp fangs, arching bodies, two with thick flower head terminals projecting from between the lower legs. 4, 6, 5 1/2 in. (10.2, 15.2, 14 cm.) high

These small elements would have likely been apart of a processional mandapa (temple hall) that would have been a part of a elaborate structure that carried a sculptures through the streets during special festivals. Compare with another in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India, 2002, p. 26. Also see Pal, Elephants and Ivories, 1981, no. 78, and two more in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, (M.80.232.7a-b).
