A copper alloy figure of Kali copulating with Shiva
West Bengal or Bangladesh, circa 17th century
The four-armed goddess is seated in union on the prone figure of Shiva. Both figures are naked and Kali is adorned with a garland of severed heads and a belt of severed human hands. She holds a single severed head in her lower left hand and sword in the upper, her right hands in abhaya and varada mudras. Shiva is defined by his matted locks that spill over the edge of the bed with a cusped frieze, with four attending birds of prey or dogs at the corners. 5 1/4 in. (13.3 cm.) high
