A copper alloy figure of Parvati
Tamil Nadu, Chola Dynasty, 11th century
Seated in the position of royal ease, lalitasana, with her left leg pendant and the right leg bent and lying flat on the base, she wears a long dhoti finely incised and gathered in a thick pleat by her left leg down to her ankle. Her supple torso is adorned with a beaded disc necklace and a tassel that falls between her small breasts, while strands fall down across her stomach. With hands raised in katakamukha, she strikes a regal pose with her head tilted slightly up, and her face is defined by soft, worn features offering a benign expression. She wears a conical jatamakuta and her braided locks fan out across her back and arms. Her wrists and ankles are adorned with bracelets. 14 in. (35.6cm.) high
