A black stone Durga Mahishasuramardini
Northeast India, 12th century
As Mahisha emerges from the decapitated body of the buffalo, Durga delivers the death blow with her trident while grasping his head. Resplendent with her six other arms fanned out around her holding various weapons, the goddess is superbly modeled and detailed. With matted locks drawn up in an elegant jatamakuta and face dominated by wide bulging eyes, she is heavily adorned with ringed bracelets and beaded necklaces. The surrounding prabhamandala is carved in deep relief with garland-bearing apsaras flanking a kirttimukha mask at the crest, and attendant warriors flanking the buffalo and lion vehicle. The double lotus base is raised out of dense scrolling foliate forms below. 23 in. (58.4 cm.) high
