A bronze enthroned Buddha Shakyamuni

West Bengal or Bangladesh, Pala period, circa 11th century
Seated in bhumisparsa mudra with a simple robe draped over his left shoulder, his right shoulder bare. Rendered with a so-called 'short neck' and a now heavily worn downward looking face still conveys a serene expression and the raised ushnisha is set toward the back of the head. He is seated on a double-stepped platform that is raised by a pair of elephants flanking a central lion.
4 5/8 in. (11.7 cm.)high

Footnotes

Although the base is a purely Pala period Eastern Indian convention, the Buddha figure is stylistically more commonly associated with Burma. For a full discussion on the 'short neck Buddha type see Casey Singer, Tibetan Homage to Boddh Gaya, in Orientations, Vol. 32. no. 10, December 2001, pp. 44-51.

Compare with a Buddha in Minnanthu at Tayokpye Temple, see Huntington Archive no. 51778. Also compare the rendering of the figures with a miniature stele of the Eight Miraculous Events of Buddha'a Life in the Norton Simon Museum fo Art, see Pal, Art from Sri Lanka & Southeast Asia, 2004, no. 180, p. 229.

Provenance:
Private German Collection before 1970
