A gray schist relief panel of a bodhisattva, possibly Maitreya
Gandharan, 3rd/4th century
Seated in profile on a cushioned bench with his hands joined and offering an undetermined object, the bodhisattva wears a long pleated dhoti and a scarf draped over his shoulders and bare torso. His hair is gathered into a thick topknot and adorned with a stupa. The scene is divided by angular architectural beams, with a fragmentary arm and ornamental frieze on the right. 17 x 11 1/2 in. (43.1 x 29.2 cm.)
