A stucco head of Buddha
The ovoid face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes beneath prominent arching brows, long nose and full smiling mouth, his hair arranged in thick waving locks gathered into a slightly tiered ushnisha. 9 in. (22.8 cm.) high
Footnotes
The head superbly modeled with well-balanced facial features and rich well-defined locks. The domed ushnisha takes a more naturalistic topknot that has the appearance of being tiered. For another stucco head in the Victoria and Albert Museum with this similar tiered effect see Kramrisch, The Art of India, 1954, no. 44. The face and hair compare also favorably with an example in the British Museum, see Zwalf, Gandhara Sculpture, 1996, no. 545, p. 296. Also com
