A gray schist relief fragment with ascetics
Superbly carved in deep relief, with four bald-headed monks in pleated monastic robes in discourse and veneration of the now missing Buddha figure, above are two complete lay figures, one holding a flaming torch. 16 x 15 13/4 in. (40.6 x 38.9 cm.)
Footnotes
The dramatic composition of this scene represents the high point of narrative panels from Gandhara. Here the the two left monks are actively engaged in discussion with discernible expressions, and the toch bearers above suggest direct connection to the now missing central figure. Compare the treatment of the monks with a relief panel in the British Museum, see Zwalf, Gandhara Sculpture, 1996, no. 293, p. 175. Also compare the with a panel of the First Semon in the Calcutta Museum, see Marshall, The Buddhist Art of Gandhara, 1980, fig. 117, pl. 82.
