GOSSE (EDMUND)

Locrine, first edition, 2 leaves, drophead title, in a wrapper with title and reference to Ashley Library in T.J. Wise's hand, unbound, [1899]; and a quantity of books of Gosse interest, 8vo (c.40)

Footnotes

"Produced by Sir Edmund Gosse in connection with the performance of Swinburne's Tragedy Locrine... 1899, and was distributed privately" (Wise, Ashley Catalogue VII, 75, the only other copy recorded). On March 18th 1899 Swinburne wrote to Gosse "Thanks for the trouble you have kindly taken in the elucidation of Locrine..." (Laing VI, 138), but it is unclear if he saw a printed or manuscript text. See illustration on preceding page.
