Evan Franks of Tulse Hill (partly erased inscription to him by Shepherd on verso of second title, dated 3 September 1870), W.B. Slater (pencil reference to 'An Enquiry'), John Carter (book label and long pencil note), and Graham Pollard (ex. lot 54 in the Carter sale at Sothebys, 1976, ticket in Graham Baird's hand), half calf by [Simon] Kaufmann of Soho, t.e.g., 8vo, For Private Circulation, [1870]-75

"Shepherd's first piracy... was printed for him by Strangeways and Walden in an edition of 55 copies. 44 and perhaps more of these were destroyed by BM Pickering in December 1870. The only copy of this edition so far located belongs to John Carter..." (Carter & Pollard, Precis of Paden, 1967, p.2). The volume comprises their A1, BB & D1 bound together.
