Stanley William Hayter (British, 1901-1988)

Untitled (Black and Moorhead 11)
The extremely rare linocut printed in black, 1927, the only known impression, on thin Japan, signed, dated and inscribed 'Paris' in pencil, with margins, 114 x 147mm (4 1/2 x 5 7/8in)(SH)

Footnotes

Hayter arrived in Paris in 1926. His practice at the time was heavily influenced by the Old Masters to whose work he was exposed during his frequent visits to the Louvre. This linocut relates compositionally to Rembrandt's 'A Negress lying down', 1658 (Bartsch 205).
