A handwritten Billy Joel speech
3 numbered and lined pages from a legal pad containing a handwritten speech given by Billy Joel at a 1988 fundraiser on behalf of Long Island congressman George Hochbrueckner. Joel spoke in support of the congressman because of the latter's efforts to help the East End Baymen, the traditional commercial fishermen of Long Island. The speech reads in part, "The tradition of our local fishermen gives us a sense of who we are a pride of place, a living heritage of a history that has been passed down to us in the stories of Herman Melville, the art of Winslow Homer, and the poetry of Walt Whitman...The fishermen of Long Island have always been the vanguard in the fight to protect the rivers, the harbors, the bays, the ocean...." 8 1/2 x 13 in.
