Footnotes
Born in France in 1883, Paul Iribe began his career as an illustrator for French satirical journals. In 1908, his work inspired fashion designer Paul Poiret to commission Iribe to illustrate his dress collection for the popular Gazette Du Bon Ton. His illustrations of wealthy stylish women engaging in casual activities launched Iribe's design career which would later include contributions to seven issues of Vogue magazine. In 1919 Iribe moved to Hollywood where he created numerous film sets and designs for director Cecil B. DeMille, including the wardrobe for Gloria Swanson in the 1919 film Male and Female. Iribe's monumental Egyptian set for the 1923 silent film The Ten Commandments included ten-story high walls covered in hieroglyphs, statues of Rameses II, sphinxes, and even today is considered one of the most extensive film sets ever constructed.
