PROVENANCE:
The Property of a Private European Collector
The present paintings most likely originally formed two panels of a larger polyptych. Stylistically they appear to be by the same hand that painted a two-sided panel depicting The Visitation and Two Angels, 58.5 x 65.5 cm., which was attributed to the Master of the Antwerp Adoration (active 1520-1530) (sale, Drouot, Paris, 30 March 1998, lot 35).
We are grateful to Peter van den Brink for confirming that these panels are by The Master of the Antwerp Adoration (see the catalogue note on pg. 17) from photographs. He has partly reconstructed the Maryan Altarpiece of which these are a part (see: P. van den Brink, 'A shattered jigsaw puzzle: On a partly reconstructed Altarpiece by the Master of the Antwerp Adoration', Wallraf-Richartz Jahrbuch, 2007, pp. 161-80). He further points out that the figures in the right-hand panel are Mary Salome, her husband Zebedee and their children James the Greater and John the Evangelist and not The Holy Family.
