An early 19th century Roman micromosaic of a hound
Circular, the well detailed dog depicted with head turned to the left, seated on a grassy patch with intense blue back ground and red and white millefiori teserrae to the border, mounted in a tortoiseshell and gold mounted box.
Footnotes
For a similar plaque possibly by Giacomo Raffaelli and set in a box attributed to Johann Christian Neuber, see cat no 6 in J H Gabriel, The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics (London 2000). The Gilbert exzample has the dog facing the opposite way but has a similar treatment of the sky and border.
