The Duke of Westminster was a title created by Queen Victoria in 1874 and bestowed upon her good friend Hugh Lupus Grosvenor (1825-1899). The 1st Duke of Westminster KG, PC, JP was an English landowner, politician and racehorse owner whose family seat is Eaton Hall, Cheshire.

Elected as a Whig Member of Parliament in 1847, Hugh Grosvenor entered the House of Lords in 1869. As well as his political influence, his military links were also strong. In 1860, he founded the Queens Westminster Rifle Volunteers and became Lieutenant Colonel, as well as later leading the Cheshire Yeomanry as Colonel Commandant from 1869.

The Cheshire Yeomanry was a county regiment of light Calvary raised in response to fears of invasion from Napoleonic France. In 1803, they were formed into the Western Cheshire Yeomanry Calvary and, by 1908, were the Earl of Chester's Regiment of Yeomanry Calvary.

Unfortunately, we cannot be sure what this jug was presented for and we have been unable to recover information on the recipient. However, we can suggest that he was part of, or associated with, the Congleton Troop within the Cheshire Yeomanry. The personal link between the Duke and this particular troop is geographical, as Eaton Hall is situated just outside the village of Congleton, Cheshire.

Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
