A set of four George III silver-gilt goblets
Vase-shaped bowls embossed and chased to lower section with a wide band of frosted acanthus leaves, upper section applied with narrow band of continuous laurel leaves and berries, each terminating in a spread foot chased with a similar decorated band, engraved with wings issuing from a coronet beneath a crown, height 17.3cm, weight 49.79oz. (4)
Footnotes
Engraved with the crest of BRANDENBURG ensigned by an Electoral Crown.
The use of the crest in this way was commonplace and regular British practice but most uncommon in Germany at this time.
At the Assay date the Margraves of Brandenburg had risen to be Kings in Prussia, then Kings of Prussia, and hence entitled to a crown of supreme status. As the Kings still continued to exercise their duties and responsibilities as Electors of the Holy Roman Emperor we conjecture that these goblets were British-designed gifts of the King (in his capacity as Elector) as part of some of diplomatic courtesy.
