Footnotes

John Wedderburn (1743-1820) made his fortune in the West Indian sugar trade as Merchant, sugar plantation and slave owner. He travelled to Jamaica in 1762 and rapidly acquired several plantations, including some from his new wife, becoming one of the largest landowners in Jamaica. Upon his return to England some 25 years later Wedderburn settled in Clapham, London, becoming partner in the West India merchant house, Webster & Co., which from 1801 subsequently became Wedderburn, Webster & Co. It is also thought he was one of the founder merchant merchant subscribers to the West India Dock Company.
