A George III silver ancient Etruscan style ewer

Inverted baluster form, the stylised trefoil rim with upward lip, the panelled handle with bifurcated junction and stylised anthemion terminal, with ivory insulators, crested, height 16.5cm, weight 20oz.

This design for the present lot is taken from the 5th century BC Etruscan beaked oinochoe found both in terracotta and bronze. Bronze examples with the same acorn and anthemion decoration are known, for a further example in the British Museum, see cat 88 in Ellen Macnamara 'The Etruscans' (London 1990).
