A famille rose 'fruit and seed' bowl

Guangxu six-character mark and of the period
Enamelled on the exterior with a butterfly in flight beside a leafy flowering spray issuing two ripening bitter melon, one bursting open to reveal the plentiful seeds, beside shafts of bamboo, both the melon spray and bamboo extending into the interior with two further ripening and bursting fruit and another butterfly in flight, box. 11.6cm (4 1/2in) diam. (2).

清光緒粉彩瓜竹蝶紋碗礬紅「大清光緒年製」楷書款

The oddly-shaped fruit bursting with seeds is most likely a melon, 瓜 gua, which is a symbol of fertility. An earlier example of this design on a bowl, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, is illustrated by R.Krahl and C.von Spee, Chinese Ceramics from the Gulexuan Collection, Lünen, 2003, no.117.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
