Two famille verte baluster vases

18th century
Each brightly enamelled around the bulbous body with a continuous scene, one with a scholar on horseback accompanied by four attendants variously holding up a parasol, a fan and two staffs, approaching a group of three boys playing with hobby-horses on a terrace, the other vase with an Immortal lady accompanied by a maidservant holding a baby boy descending on a cloud towards a lady holding her hands up in respectful worship and surrounded by five attendants with a large fan, furled parasol and tending her horse, both scenes set within rocky landscapes above stiff lappets at the foot, a band with four cartouches containing one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, bajixiang, at the shoulder and floral sprays on the neck, wood stands. Each 35.2cm (13 7/8in) high (4).

Provenance: believed to have been acquired by Lady Lucas in the early 1960s when furnishing Michelmersh Court in Hampshire, and thence by descent.
