A fine and large blue and white 'dragon' dish

Qianlong seal mark and of the period
The imposing dish boldly painted on the interior in underglaze blue imitating the Ming-style 'heaping and piling' with a ferocious winged five-clawed front-facing dragon surrounding a flaming pearl amid a foliate scroll issuing thirteen blossoms, all surrounded by a wide border containing two striding five-clawed dragons amid foliate lotus meander beneath a band of swirling and foaming waves at the rim, the exterior similarly painted with two striding five-clawed dragons amongst blossoms and leafy scroll. 51cm (20in) diam.

Compare a very similar dish but with a Yongzheng mark and of the period, illustrated by R.Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection. Vol.Two, London, 1994, no.761.

See also a related dish with a dragon encircling a central shou character amid cloud scrolls and surrounded by four dragons, Qianlong mark and of the period, illustrated by R.Krahl and C.von Spee, Chinese Ceramics from the Gulexuan Collection, Lünen, 2003, no.123.

Another very similar dish, Qianlong seal mark and of the period, was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 30 October 2001, lot 813. A related dish, Qianlong mark and of the period, with a shou character more similar to the example in the Gulexuan Collection, was sold at Christie's New York, 24-25 March 2011, lot 1667.
