A very rare blue and white rectangular incense burner and cover

Wanli six-character mark and of the period
The rectangular body painted in the upper section on each side with a pair of confronted five-clawed dragons chasing a flaming pearl above the lower section with foaming waves also covering the tall legs, the lip and the two raised rectangular handles painted with a leiwen band, the stepped cover with a wide border containing the Eight Trigrams beneath bands of cloud scrolls, classic scrolls and foaming water, all surmounted by a finial modelled as a roaring Buddhist lion with a peaked mane and flowing beard and tail. 21.7cm (8½in) high (2).

Rectangular censers of this type are very rare, particularly those that still have the original cover. For one very similar example, see Masterworks of Chinese Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1969, no.36. Another similar piece from the Idemitsu Collection, but less strongly modelled, missing the cover and with lion-head handles, is illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Japan, 1987, no.735. A third example, Wanli mark and of the period but also without a cover, is illustrated in The Fame of Flame: Imperial Wares of the Jiajing and Wanli Periods, Hong Kong, 2009, no.101.
