An enamelled rectangular plaque

Cyclically dated xinwei year (AD1931), signed and sealed Wang Qi
Wittily enamelled in shades of blue, coral-red and sepia with a smiling seated Budai, his right arm resting on a treasure sack with an alms bowl in front of him, inscribed and sealed at the top left. 38.4cm x 25.2cm (15in x 9½in)

Provenance: purchased in the late 1990s from Dominic Jellinek Ltd. and Carter Oriental Ltd. who are believed to have originally bought them directly from the late Anthony Evans, the well-known collector of 20th century Chinese porcelain.

民國 粉彩人物圖瓷板 「王琦」款

款識: 行也布袋,坐也布袋。放下布袋,何等自在!辛未(1931)秋月撫黃癭飄之筆意,西昌陶迷散人王琦。
印文: 西昌王琦、陶齋

來源:於二十世紀九十年代晚期購自Dominic Jellinek Ltd.和Carter Oriental Ltd.,相信他們是直接從已故知名二十世紀瓷器收藏家Anthony Evans手上購得

The inscription may be translated as:

When he is walking he carries a Budai, when he is sitting he carries a Budai, when he is resting he carries a Budai; How free and unrestrained to put down the Budai!
Written in the style of Huang Yingpiao in the autumn of the xinwei year, (by) Taomi sanren, Wangqi, of Xichang.


Budai is the name of the monk depicted, but the Chinese characters also literally mean 'cloth bag'.
