Footnotes

十六/十七世紀 剔紅描金編竹花卉紋委角方盒,內藏蓮瓣式托盤

This type of basketry was popular during the mid to late Ming dynasty and was probably used for domestic purposes. Lacquer and basketweave boxes are usually seen with polychrome or gold painting, or mother-of-pearl inlay; see several examples in the Muwen Tang Collection, illustrated by S.Kwan, Chinese Lacquer, Hong Kong, 2010, pl.85-95. The present lot with carved lacquer is one of the rarer examples, compare a related example illustrated in East Asian Lacquer from the Florence and Herbert Irving Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1991, no.64.

Another example of a lacquer and basketweave box, also with a central tray with red lacquer dishes, and dated by inscription on the base reading 'Made for the use of Yang Chunfang in the summer of the jiachen year of the Yongzheng reign period of the Great Qing Dynasty', corresponding to AD 1724, is illustrated by Chen Xiejun and S.Whitfield (eds.), Shanghai Museum, London, 2007, no.301.
