A rare red lacquer five-lobed 'Buddhist lion' dish

Mid 16th century
Crisply carved on the interior with a Buddhist lion playfully tossing a tasselled brocade ball amid the tasselled Daoist lyre, books and lozenge, beside a ruyi-head and a leaf, all within a border with further Daoist mystical symbols including a double gourd, and natural motifs including a prunus blossom and a kernel, the exterior carved with a classic-scroll pattern.
20.4cm (8in) diam.
