The present lot is based in form and design on a Han Dynasty prototype and would have probably been used on the scholar's desk as a scroll weight. For an early example dated 3rd-1st century BC, see W.Watson, Ancient Chinese Bronzes, London, 1977, pl.89b; and for another gilt-bronze example dated as Han Dynasty, 1st century BC - 1st century AD, see J.Rawson and E.Bunker, Ancient Chinese and Ordos Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1990, pl.116.
