A carved ivory box and cover

17th century

Footnotes

十七世紀 象牙雕佛獅紋蓋盒

It is very unusual to find ivory boxes of Chinese manufacture with screw-fitting covers as on the present lot, which may have been intended for the South East Asian markets. A very similar box and cover but with a lion finial, dated to the second half of the 17th century, is illustrated by W.Watson (ed.) Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, London, 1984, no.187. Compare also a related ivory box in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, no.2564-1856, illustrated ibid., no.186.
