A rare gilt-bronze and cloisonné enamel standing Buddhist lion

18th/19th century
The mythical beast powerfully cast with its front legs astride, the head turned to the right with the menacing jaws open, the mane flowing in curls around the back of the head and shoulders reaching the aperture decorated with cloud scrolls above lotus petals set atop the enamelled saddle cloth with a lotus spray on each side, caparisoned around the body with a strap and bells, the tail held high.

Compare a similarly modelled gilt bronze Buddhist lion, but with a gilt bronze rather than cloisonné enamel saddle, from the British Museum (no.1989,0805.1), presently dated as 10th-11th century, illustrated in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, exhibition catalogue The Mount Trust Collection of Chinese Art, London, 1970, Catalogue no.42 (where it is dated 907-1125).

The powerfully modelled lion resembles the modelling of Tang Dynasty lions, such as that produced stoneware from the British Museum, illustrated by W.Watson in La Céramique Tang et Liao, Fribourg, 1984, pl.226. However, despite the close resemblance to the British Museum gilt bronze lion, the cloisonné enamelling on the present lot would suggest an 18th/19th century date.
