A cloisonné enamel 'chilong' box and cover

Ming Dynasty
Of circular form, the slightly domed cover, colourfully decorated with two stridng chilong each holding a linghzi spray in their jaws, enamelled in white and aubergine, amidst cloud scrolls, the side of the cover with a linghzi fungus scroll and the side of the box with a floral scroll, all reserved on a turquoise ground, the interior and underside gilt.

Compare a cloisonné enamel circular box and cover from the Muśee des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, similarly decorated with two chilong chasing each other on the cover, attributed to the Yuan or early Ming Dynasty; and another of similar design but executed in black and red lacquer, attributed to the Southern Song Dynasty, from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; both illustrated by B.Quette in Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, New York, 2011, p.34, figs.3.6 and 3.7.
