A very rare cloisonné enamel two-handled bowl
Cast Jingtai mark, the cloisonné enamel early to mid 15th century
The body brightly enamelled with a band of lotus blossoms in dark blue, yellow, red and white amid scrolling leaves in dark green on a turquoise ground above a row of ruyi-heads flanked by leaves at the foot, the flaring neck with a further row of lotus amid foliate scrolls, the body flanked by two gilt-bronze handles each formed as a fierce two-horned dragon-head with toothed jaws issuing a handle incised with keyfret suspending a single flange, all raised on a gilt-bronze foot, the interior set with a plain gilt bronze cup beneath a band of cloisonné enamel foliate scrolls. 13.7cm (5½in) wide

Compare a related cloisonné enamel gui, but with enamelled rather than gilt handles, Jingtai mark and dated as early Ming Dynasty, illustrated in the Compendium of the Collections in the Palace Museum: Enamels 1: Cloisonné in the Yuan (1271-1368) and Ming (1368-1644) Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, pl.23. See also a related cloisonné enamel gui with dragon handles, and similarly decorated with an enamelled border around the interior of the rim, dated to the second half of the 15th century, from the Muśee des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, illustrated by B.Quette, ed., in Cloisonné: Chinese Enamels from the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, New York, 2011, p.84, fig.5.5.
It is also interesting to compare the very similar lotus blossom design on a cloisonné enamel gu vase, dated to the early Ming Dynasty; and the similar cloud scrolls on a cloisonné enamel tripod bowl, dated to the early Ming Dynasty, both illustrated by the Palace Museum in ibid., pls.20 and 46 respectively.
A similar example in the legendary English collection of T.B.Kitson, was sold at Sotheby's London, 21 February 1961, lot 272 and Christie's London, 15 December 1983, lot 355.
