A rare early stone plaque depicting Guanyin and six attendants
13th century
The architectural frieze carved in relief with a central figure of a male Guanyin in lalitasana with a high topknot above the serene contemplative face, a long ribbon flowing from the right shoulder over the right arm, the right hand holding a whorled shell and the left hand resting on the left knee, flanked by two shaven attendant monks in mirror image each holding in one hand a small pot and in the other a round bead, beside a further attendant monk, each holding up a musical stone on a long pole with long ribbons flowing over the head of Guanyin, each beside a warrior guardian in full armour and helmet holding up a weapon over one shoulder, each of the five figures on an individual lotus pedestal against an incised backdrop of thickly scrolling cloud-like swirls, an inscription on the reverse and mounted on a low stand; the lot includes the sale catalogue Collection Rubinstein (Paris, 2002).

The deeply incised curves of the flowing robes and the style of the faces and lotus pedestals suggest a date in the 13th century for the present lot.
