A fine jadeite 'dragon' vase and cover

19th century
The vessel carved with great intricacy and delicacy in high relief encircled by four energetic writhing dragons in pursuit of flaming pearls amidst cloud scrolls, raised on a stepped foot surrounded by elaborate swirling waves, the cover surmounted by an openwork carving of a finial enclosing a writhing dragon, the lustrous stone of white tone with attractive apple-green inclusions, wood stand, box. 21.5cm (8in) high (4).

Compare a related white jade 'dragon' vase and cover, Qing dynasty, from the Qing Court collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Jadeware (II), Beijing, 2008, pl.21. The deft carving of the high-relief dragon may also be compared to that on a pale grey-green jade 'dragon and phoenix' vase and cover, dated to the Qianlong period, illustrated by S.H.Hansford in Chinese Carved Jades, London, 1968, pl.87.
