A pale green jade group of a crane and deer

19th century
The openwork group formed as an antlered stag with its head turned to the left and incised with scattered star-shapes, lightly prancing beside an elegant crane with a slender twisting neck and gripping a foliate branch issuing three peaches in its beak, the distinctive red cap rendered in applied coral, stand, box.

The present lot is remarkable for the simple elegance of its curving lines. The crane and deer represent not only the wish for immortality, but also the desire for high office, as both symbolise official ranks of the civil service.
