A fine grey jade carving of a mythical beast

The grey jade with characteristic black striations, retaining the shape of the original pebble and carved as a mythical beast with its head looking over its left shoulder and gripping a leafy double lingzhi spray in its mouth, the mane in thickly curling stylised locks and the feet tucked underneath, wood stand. 9.4cm (3¾in) long (2).

Compare the grey flecked stone retaining its original pebble shape, and the treatment of the carving with luxuriant curls and sweetly clasped paws in a piece dated to the Song to Yuan Dynasties, included in the exhibition Chinese Jade Animals held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, 1996, Catalogue, no.114.
