An unusual documentary Yixing bowl

Impressed Chen Jinhou zhi seal mark, 18th century
The bowl formed from a pale clay with red flecks, the exterior finely moulded with five cartouches each containing a writhing four-clawed dragon amid cloud scrolls, beneath a band of an inscription in archaic seal script, all with traces of a rich dark patina, box. 19.8cm (7¾in) diam. (2).

A bowl with the seal mark of the same potter, Chen Jinhou, is illustrated in The Stonewares of Yixing: From the Ming Period to the Present, 1986, fig.169.

Compare a very similar 'dragon' bowl, also with an impressed Chen Jinhou zhi mark but made from a more yellow speckled clay, from the Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn Collection, which was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 28 November 2011, lot 215.
