A very fine blanc-de-chine figure of Buddha

Impressed He Chaozong yin four-character mark, circa 1640
The Buddha elegantly modelled with elaborate tight curls covering the head and his eyes calmly downcast with serene expression and elongated ears, his right hand holding a sutra and left hand in the bhumisparsa mudra, wearing long flowing robes in thick folds with bare chest and feet, standing on a single-lotus pedestal with beaded edging, the mark impressed on the back of the figure, all covered with a rich creamy glaze. 47.5cm (18½in) high

He Chaozong (by tradition, living AD1522-1612) is considered to be one of the greatest master potters of Dehua figures, creating figures of pure white clay with a creamy pearl-like glaze. By absorbing various techniques of clay modelling, wood tooling and stone carving, he developed his own method which became known as the He School.

He Chaozong excelled at creating statues of the Buddha, Guanyin and of the Immortals for temples and palaces, but figures of the Buddha are among the most rare and precious of his creations. His works can now be found in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing and in leading private collections and museums in Europe.

Compare a very similar figure attributed to He Chaozong in the Percival David Foundation, illustrated by P.J.Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, New York, 1967, pl.146A. Another blanc-de-chine standing Buddha in a similar pose but slightly smaller was included in the exhibition by S.Marchant & Son, Blanc de Chine, London, 2006, no.8.
