A very rare blue and yellow 'dragon' bowl

Kangxi six-character mark and of the period
The thinly-potted bowl delicately painted on the exterior in vibrant underglaze blue with two roaring five-clawed dragons divided by two leafy sprays of lingzhi fungus each supporting a four-lobed cartouche containing a shou character, all amid flames and cloud scrolls and above a double row of lotus petals at the foot, a thin yellow glaze of lemony tone stopping at the underglaze blue areas, the interior central medallion with a further five-clawed dragon amid flames and similarly glazed yellow, fitted box. 13.3cm (5 1/16in) diam. The present lot is truly exceptional for its quality and attention to detail. The workmanship of the potter is of the highest standard, with the fine bowl evenly and confidently thrown. The painters of both the underglaze blue and the yellow glaze were clearly similar masters of their craft: from the even application of the blue in two tones, to the careful addition of the yellow glaze applied over the white body but avoiding the areas of underglaze blue. Pieces such as the present lot are representative of the finest production of the Kangxi reign period.

A similar blue and yellow 'dragon' bowl, Kangxi mark and of the period, is in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing (Gu00157746). Very similar bowls are also included in an illustration of the Qianqinggong in the Forbidden City, set out before a throne as part of a large group of bowls containing tempting delicacies including fruit and pastries. See Classics of Forbidden City: Life in the Forbidden City of Qing Dynasty, Beijing, 2007, no.275.

Compare also a very similar bowl in the Nanjing Museum illustrated in Treasures in the Royalty: The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p.71.
