A Roman marble Nereid riding a Hippocamp
Circa 1st Century B.C./A.D.
The Nereid with drapery around her legs, riding side-saddle on the hippocamp, her left arm around the half-horse, half-sea monster's neck, 8¼in (21cm) high

Joseph Klein Collection, formed in New York between 1941 and 1980. Thence by descent.

Literature:
Marine subjects such as this became popular in the Hellenistic period and appear on Roman art on mosaics and reliefs. The nereid could represent Thetis or Amphitrite.
