A Zulu War period British Martini-Henry MKII breechloading rifle with bayonet and four cartridges
Serial no. 2677, .455 caliber. 33 inch barrel, the breech bearing various War Department acceptance and issue marks. Right side of action marked with crown over V.R/BSA & M.C./1878/crown/broad arrow/II, top marked SX. Varnished walnut stock, right side of buttstock marked No. 2677. Together with Pattern 1868 socket bayonet, the 21 1/2 inch hollow triangular blade bearing numerous War Department marks; associated brass-mounted leather scabbard with WD marks. Also included are four original cartridges with crimped brass casings, one marked for the Kirkee Arsenal as well as a later brown leather military sling with maker mark Hugh Carson, Ltd. Ottawa, 1919.
Condition: Very good. Barrel and action with grey metal showing sharp markings, strong bore and scattered small marks and areas of light pitting. Sound wood showing wear to varnish, scattered light marks and staining and one deep bruise to left side of wrist. Bayonet with bright steel blade showing minor pitting, the shank retaining much blued finish. Scabbard with surface scuffing but very sound. Cartridges good with scattered marks, some showing areas of corrosion.
