An unusual cased German breechloading underhammer percussion pistol by Valentin Christian Schilling

The 7 1/2 inch octagonal, grey Damascus barrel rifled in .44 caliber; swamped muzzle; fire-blued fore-sight; top flat inlaid in gold V. Chr: Schilling in Suhl. Casehardened rising breech action activated by a fire-blued side lever; breechblock engraved with an allegorical scene featuring a man at a fire watched by a malevolent gentleman, probably the devil, in a rocky landscape with bats and owls; action engraved with scrollwork, the left side with scene of an armored gentleman holding a small crossbow; cock head engraved as a monster; nipple cover safety; adjustable rear sight; engraved screwheads. Long, scroll-engraved tang pierced with shoulder stock fitting. Engraved spur triggerguard. Casehardened buttcap with cap reservoir, the lid engraved with a 16th century gentleman holding a crossbow. Walnut grip with checkered panels framed by intaglio-carved scrollwork terminating in grotesque masks. Complete with original ebony banded case, the lid with burlwood panel set with folding German silver handle. Green baize-lined interior piped with black and white silk thread. Accessories include figured walnut shoulder stock with engraved and casehardened fittings and finely relief-carved with scrollwork, bullet mold, German silver powder flask, tamper, nipple wrench, combination screwdriver, oiler, powder measure, pick and cleaning rod.
Condition: Excellent and showing little use. Case lid with some hairline cracks. Lining with minor wear, one section of piping loose. Accessories fine to excellent.
